Best Practices in Publications Spring 2010
MAP board members discuss challenges they are facing in 2010. Here is what they said:

Gary Whitaker, Publisher, 417 Magazine

“Our flagship magazine, 417 Magazine, is actually growing in readership and revenue. My biggest budget challenge is shifting resources from the publication of our quarterly shelter magazine (417 Home), which is struggling in an economy burdened by a weak housing market, into growth areas like events, Web site publishing, e-newsletters, etc. The skills needed to grow our event and digital divisions are not the same as the skills of our Home magazine team. That may mean slimming down the payroll on the print side and bringing in new faces on the event and digital side.”

Jim McCarty, Editor, Rural Missouri Magazine

“Our biggest challenge in 2010 is increasing ad revenue which decreased for the first time in about 20 years in 2009. We are doing this by pushing more merchandise with the Rural Missouri brand such as books, cycling jerseys, hats, and prints of photos from our pages. This is showing great promise as a third ‘leg’ of income, along with subscriptions and advertising.”
