Looking Up in a Down Economy
The economy has presented challenges for publishers large and small recently—just witness consumer magazine circulation figures, as tracked by ABC’s latest FAS-FAX report released Feb. 15, 2010.

The report shows that overall paid subscriptions for the second-half of 2009 were down slightly by 2.23 percent. Single-copy sales declined 9 percent compared to the same period in 2008.

But there’s a bright spot for highly targeted publications, especially those related to health.  Clean Eating saw a 7.18 percent increase and Cooking Light is up 4.24 percent. Out of the 25 top-selling consumer magazines in total paid and verified circulation, Remedy/Remedy MD had the largest increase at 21.09 percent.

Special interest and enthusiast titles such as Off-Road Adventures (+483.03 percent), American Rifleman (+20.19 percent) and Birds & Blooms (+14.68 percent) also saw significant gains in total paid and verified circulation.

Doesn’t everyone wants to know how to do what these publications are doing? To find out, be sure to look for the MAP Opening Session Thursday, April 9 from 2 to 5 p.m. featuring Don Ranly, PhD., professor emeritus of the Missouri School of Journalism. Dr. Ranly will present a lively discussion on “How You Can Get More Readers—and Keep Them!”
