Google launches Fast Flip to help drive traffic to publishers PDF Print E-mail

September 15, 2009 --Yesterday, Google Labs launched Fast Flip, which offers a new way for users to view online media through an easy-to-use format that resembles magazine browsing.

Jennifer LeClaire's, newsfactor.com, reports, "Google is moving to befriend the news industry by making it easier for consumers to read articles. Google launched a new innovation Monday called Fast Flip, a news hub that aims to overcome issues associated with turning electronic pages with a Web browser."  Read her report here.

Disappointing, says Frederic Lardinois on readwriteweb.com, "Fast Flip just seems like a disappointing product. The cooperation with content producers is interesting, though we wonder if a single AdSense unit on the site will really make newspapers any money. Google Reader or personalized applications like my6sense on the iPhone or feedly on the desktop just seem far more interesting and usable than browsing through a series of screenshots."

In its beta release, you will find nearly 40 publications --newspapers, magazines, web-based newsletters.  Go to Fast Flip and let us know what you think about its possiblities for you.

Magazines are the most effective medium to drive consumers to web PDF Print E-mail

According to a recent study by the Center for Media Research, ads with web addresses are more likely to drive readers to advertiser websites. The study covered several types of advertisements, such as travel, financial, fashion, and home. For travel, 286 ads with web addresses drove consumers to the website, versus 100 ads that did not include a URL. This means advertisers should always include a web URL because consumers may no take the time to search for a website.

Independent research has documented how online and offline media influence consumers' online behavior. The research, conducted by the American Advertising Federation (AAF), BigResearch (for the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association), Mediamark Research, Inc., and the Online Publishers Association showed that print magazines most consistently drive web traffic and online searches, and that magazine ads generate web traffic at each stage of the purchase funnel, especially purchase intent.

Time spent online is leveling off
In an Ad Age interview with Forrester Analyst Jackie Rousseau-Anderson, Forrester reports on consumer media trends, which indicate that web surfing leveled off at 12 hours a week this year, after a slow growth period since 2004. Surprisingly, the report also indicates that other traditional media are experiencing stabilization, most notably newspaper and magazine reading.

Ms. Rousseau-Anderson says, "People aren't giving up traditional media yet. Again, it's all about specialization. So there is still a lot of room for growth, but people are going to seek content that specifically speaks to them. Understanding target groups becomes the key to that growth."

Publishers Press launches ad portal for its clients PDF Print E-mail

September 8, 2009 - Publishers Press, a MAP Gold Associate Member, has streamlined their file submission process for magazine publishing customers by offering easy ad submission through the portal SendMyAd.

With SendMyAd advertisers submit and approve materials directly to the SendMyAd system for both print and digital platforms. The portal preflights the ad and sends e-mail notifications to alert advertisers of uploads and approvals. "Today’s tight schedules require clean, predictable, print-ready files," adds Ed Henson, digital manufacturing group manager at Publishers Press. "This system allows remote access to preflight and validate ads prior to page creation, which means problems can be found and fixed well upstream."

SendMyAd ensures that the ads are ready for insertion into the magazine, eliminating the manual processes for Publishers Press customers. If the ad does not preflight correctly, SendMyAd alerts the advertiser and gives them directions on how to fix the ad themselves.

"A lot of time is wasted sending ad files, along with their preflight reports, back and forth between the advertiser, publisher, and printer," Veatch says. "Using this service, advertisers send an accurate file to be placed on the page, one time."  Says Henson: "By using SendMyAd, our customers and their advertisers can be sure they have increased predictability and a decreased chance of unknown problems holding up the production process at a much more critical step."

Publishers Press is a family owned company in its fifth generation, with two production plants near Louisville, Kentucky. What began as a printing company in 1866 has evolved into a leading content distributor with a strong expertise in the magazine publishing industry. The full-service operation offers capabilities that include printing, distribution, e-mail marketing, digital editions, and more, with a concentrated focus on providing solutions to its clients.
