Creating Successful Print Newsletters: Don Ranly
Print newsletters need not be complicated or difficult to produce to be effective.  We will examine various kinds of newsletters (the bulletin-board newsletter, the news-letter, and the mini-magazine or the magaletter), various formats of newsletters (typefaces, number of columns, logos, etc.) and the best forms of writing to suit the subject matter and the audience.

Interviewing with Courage and Creativity: Jacqui Banaszynski
The interview is the heart of good journalism. But too many journalists stop at a stilted Q-and-A. This workshop will explore ways to conduct interviews that turn subjects into storytellers and that fill a reporter's notebook with anecdotes, scene, telling detail and killer quotes.

How to Create Intelligent Print Advertising That Works: Stephen Kopcha
Creating great print advertising is not rocket science, but it's not easy, either. There are a few bedrock principles that will never fail you. With what you learn from this presentation and a little practice, you will be one of the few doing it right.

Magazine Makeover: Chris Harrison, David Reed
How do brand-new managers of a group of local home magazines and local business magazines improve the publications and increase advertising and circulation amidst new competition – from the previous publisher? Overhaul the design and content, expand the name to reflect the lifestyle content, hire an associate well-connected to the readership, put together focus groups and start a series of sponsorships and promotions. But the main lesson was simple -- fill the pages with compelling stories about local people.

Session 2: 9:45-11:00 a.m.
Editorial & Design

Checklist for Launch: 6 Key Steps for Successful E-newsletter campaigns: Katey Charles
So you decided to publish an e-mail newsletter, and a year later you haven’t gotten the first issue out yet? You are not alone! This presentation will help you get “unstuck” as we give an overview of the key issues every editor should consider before launching an e-mail newsletter. We’ll talk about organizing, building and automating a permission-based e-mail list; CAN-SPAM compliance; content and design; planning for personalization and targeted-list segments; and tracking and analyzing subscriber responses. The presentation will also include a brief e-mail marketing software demonstration.

B2B Magazines: Serving Your Market with a Dominant Product: Ron Wall
Ron will present a recent AscendMedia product that was number five in the Professional Audio Market and was losing money in March 2003.  He will walk through the steps Ascend took to redesign the magazine, in-depth market research, circulation improvement, new and improved sales/marketing tools and finding an editorial niche the readers needed. These changes resulted in their magazine moving into the number-two marketshare position and improved revenues of nearly $1,000,000. by the end of 2005.

Freelance Writers: The Care, Feeding, Hiring and Firing: Katie Van Luchene, Greg Holman
What does a magazine editor need from freelance writers in order to set up a solid working relationship? How should editors coach and encourage their freelancers? How do you handle freelancers whose work does not meet your expectations? And (very importantly) how do freelance writers view their editors? Two experienced freelancers, now editors, will hold court, helping editors do better business with their freelancers by shining light on freelancing from both sides.

Session 3: 11:30 a.m. -12:45 p.m..
Editorial & Design
Grammar Review 3: Jen Moeller
It’s time to focus on verbs. From the difference between “lie” and “lay” to why you should avoid the passive voice, this session examines the engine behind your sentences and will provide tips on how to get the most from your predicates.

Profiles with Courage: Jeannette Cooperman
A good profile steals somebody’s soul; it redeems a sinner or exposes the flaws of a saint. But to penetrate that deeply, you have to find disarming, strategic ways to ask questions that make even you squirm. What techniques work if you’re trying to capture someone’s essence in 200 words, create a narrative at 1,000 words or sustain interest for 5,000 words? Then, how should an editor shape and structure the piece to interest even someone who’s never heard of this person? Publish a flat profile, and you only confirm the assumptions of the arrogant that no one’s interesting but them.

Managing Photography in a Digital World: Bob Holt
This session will offer recommendations to help you ensure a smooth movement of digital images from contributors to print while maintaining high quality.

Sales
Presenting Your Unique Selling Proposition: Josh Gordon

How to Create (and Use) Compelling Marketing Materials: Kirby Asplund
Great marketing isn’t created in a vacuum. It involves input and participation from many sources and departments – orchestrated by the marketer (or the marketing team).  This session will explore the elements of marketing that help to sell pages and drive revenue.

Overview of the Merger and Acquisition Market: Steve Blumreich
Steve will cover capital market conditions, merger and acquisition activity and how the "baby- boomer" generation may hurt or help values of middle-market companies. Also included will be suggestions on how to improve the value of companies and some things that can hurt the value of companies.
